They say the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, but the best time to relocate a tree is right now! October through April are the perfect months for tree spade projects.

There are many benefits of relocating a mature tree over planting a new one. We’ve collected a few of our favorites here.

Privacy

Large trees serve as beautiful, natural barriers that provide your yard with instant privacy. Does your pool or deck feel exposed to neighbors? Consider using a tree spade to reorganize new or existing trees and transform your yard into a private sanctuary.

Preserve Legacy Trees

When an older tree has grown too large for it’s environment, cutting it down is not the only option. Trees with history and character can be safely relocated with a tree spade to a more suitable location that will better serve their needs.

Trees as a Design Element

Soften the architectural lines of your home and transition the eye from the roofline to the soil by incorporating trees into your home design. Bringing in a unique tree can give your home a more sophisticated feel and add synergy with the rest of your landscaping.

Also, large trees are perfect for blocking those inevitable, unsightly views that are out of your control. Tree spading can help you replace the view you can’t stand with a natural, colorful backdrop for your yard.

Trees with Function

Arrange trees strategically to create natural shade by the pool or provide a screening or a ceiling over an outdoor space. You can also use larger trees to shade your home and reduce summer cooling cost. As an added benefit, large trees will also protect your home from winter winds and therefor reduce winter heating cost as well.

Save Time and Effort

Finally, tree spading saves labor, planting time, and years of maintenance of a juvenile tree. Your neighborhood and landscape are constantly changing; a tree spade may provide the edge your yard needs to keep up!

  1. You mentioned that tree spading saves labor, planting time, and years of maintenance of a juvenile tree. Do most landscaping companies have the equipment to move medium and big sized trees? My family and I just moved into a new home and my wife doesn’t like the placement of the trees in our yard. Hiring a professional to come and relocate our trees and plants might be a good idea.

    1. Hi Derek! Though Sal’s Nursery may have all the proper equipment to move larger-sized trees, this is not the case for all companies. It would be best to call around to your local landscaping companies and see if they have the proper equipment for such a job. If you are close by, feel free to give us a call at (215) 699-9080 – we would love to discuss some solutions for your yard!

  2. It got me when you said that tree spading could be done to preserve a tree that is bigger than its area already. As you mentioned, it will be transferred to a more appropriate location. I guess I need to have a tree spaded soon since it might be dangerous for our outdoor furniture already. I just don’t want to cut them down since our planet needs more trees these days.

    1. Millie, tree spading is a great option to preserve a tree as opposed to cutting it down. We would love to discuss options specific to your situation and hopefully come to a solution that will preserve your tree!
