The dog days of summer can take its toll on that lovely flower garden you planted back in April or May. By August, many flowers are fading away. However, with some planning, you can have a colorful end to summer. Here are some long-blooming options to consider.

Perennials

You might be avoiding perennials because you’ve heard they don’t bloom as long. This isn’t the case with all of them. Here is a list of long-blooming perennials, courtesy of the Pennsylvania Cooperative Extension.

Annuals

Take time this month to pick off the old dead flowers from your spring planting. This will help your flowers continue to bloom longer into the season. In addition, here are a few annuals known to bloom for a long time. Mix these in so you always have some color in your garden.

Shrubs

Lastly, don’t forget shrubs. Although we often associate flowering shrubs with spring (like forsythia and lilacs), there are shrubs that bloom in late summer. Some examples are Butterfly Shrub, Bluebeard or Blue Spirea, Rose of Sharon and Abelia. You may want to consider these as a backdrop to your garden.

Still not sure what to choose? If you want a garden that will look beautiful all through the seasons, Sal’s Nursery and Landscaping can provide the expert guidance to bring that vision to life.
